Custom Postage and the Digital Photography Revolution

Lately I’ve been mulling over the many ways that digital photography has changed our lives — custom postage being just one tiny part of this far-reaching revolution.

Do you remember:

  • The need to be very selective about taking photos because your roll of film might run out just before the best possibility?
  • Paying for every single picture you took, even the really bad ones?
  • Waiting days for your photos to come back from the lab?
  • Later, the thrill of only having to wait a short time for a one-hour photo lab?
  • The smell of chemicals in darkrooms?
  • Way back, when black and white film was common and color film a special luxury?

Now everything has changed. With the digital photography revolution, we can take pictures to our heart’s content, email them to friends and family, improve them on our computers, make customized items like the postage this site describes, and more. Cafepress is a place where you can get not just custom postage but also mugs, tshirts, posters, calendars, you name it, all with your photos on them.

There are other art forms that build on the widespread use of digital cameras. Photo-collages and digital scrapbooking are two forms that are quite close to each other in skills and techniques. I’ve done both, and wish I had more time for them, as I enjoy each of them. Here’s one of my photo-collages, just for fun. This is of Ajijic, by Lake Chapala, Mexico:

In this sometimes crazy world that we live in, digital photos and all the add-ons like custom postage are a delightful respite.
